| Straußwirtschaften (sometimes also called “Besenwirtschaften”) are no ordinary taverns in the original sense of the word. Since the times of Charles the Great an old tradition is cultivated by this expression, which allows the winemakers, over a period of four months a year, to serve self-produced wines to their guests. Above that, light meals such as bread, soup, cheese etc. may also be served alongside. This service usually takes place in the yard, cellar or a special service room of the winemaker’s estate. To signal the readiness of service to the guests, the winemakers adorn their estates with bunches of flowers (“Sträuße”), bouquets made from wine berries or sometimes besoms (“Besen”). Among the winemakers in Ediger-Eller this tradition is well-kept since generations. |

To visit a Straußwirtschaft is a unique experience, which is seldom offered. So it’s well worth during your stay in Ediger-Eller to always keep an eye out for the sign of the wine berry-bouquet! |
