ROMAN TIMES

It is highly probable, that the fair tradition of winemaking along the Moselle can be traced back to the highly civilised conquerors from ancient Italy.

As proven by archaeological findings from the 2nd and 3rd century a.c., the Romans were settling in the area of today’s Ediger-Eller to cultivate wine berries and to establish a flourishing trade with the resident Celtic tribes.

Until our days, one can behold the stony witnesses of Roman settlement in the shape of the burial grounds near Nehren or the ruins of a Roman garrison upon the Calmont.

Wine, women and song
Even in the 21st century, the Romans are still kept alive in Ediger-Eller.

In regular intervals, the event-gastronomy “Christoffel” provides a stylish Roman feast for our visitors. Garbed in authentic Roman robes and tunics, the visitors are led in a Roman procession (from October until April illuminated by torchlight!) towards the lustrous halls of Roman “Senator” Clemens Mosellanus.

Afterwards they are ready to enjoy the exotic delicacies of ancient Roman cuisine, accompanied by games, wine and song.
